The core of the day, clocked from the terminal exit

  1. +0:00

    Meet at the terminal exit

Your guide is waiting right outside the terminal exit, holding a sign with your name; it takes about a minute to meet once you step out. Before anyone gets in the vehicle, we read the all-aboard time off your ship's daily program together and agree the time we will be back at the terminal exit.

  2. +0:25

Ephesus, at the gate that fits

About 20-25 minutes by road, longer when several ships are in. On a comfortable call we go in at the Upper Gate and walk downhill. On a tight one we use the Lower Gate and loop back to it.

  3. +0:35

    Down through the city

Your tickets are already bought, so after the security check you simply walk: the State Agora and the Odeon, then Curetes Street with the Temple of Hadrian and the public latrines, then the Library of Celsus.

  4. +1:45

The Great Theater and Harbor Street

Marble Street brings you to the theater cut into the hillside, where Acts 19 sets the silversmiths' riot. Harbor Street runs from its foot toward a sea that silt pushed away centuries ago.

  5. +2:05

The checkpoint at the Lower Gate

The vehicle is waiting here. Your guide checks the clock against the return time you agreed. If there is room, this is where an extra begins. If there is not, we drive back early and the spare time is yours in town.

  6. +2:15

    Back toward the port

About 20-25 minutes on the road. If you added a stop, this leg moves later by exactly the time that stop took, which is why we cost every extra in minutes before we suggest it.

  7. +2:40

The terminal exit, with time in hand

You are back at the terminal exit, with the 5-10 minute walk to your gangway still ahead and the margin before all-aboard untouched. The town's waterfront is about 50 meters from the exit if you want a coffee first.

Skip-the-line entry included

We buy your entrance tickets in advance at the official Ministry price and add nothing on top, so you walk past the ticket line. You still pass the security check like everyone else; no one can skip that.

All-aboard, not departure, is the time we plan to

Your ship works with two times, and only one of them matters to us. The departure time is when the ship sails, and it is the time you see on port schedules, including our own ship schedule for Kusadasi. All-aboard comes earlier: it is the time by which every guest must be back on board, printed in the daily program the ship hands out, usually the evening before.

The gap between the two is set by each line and each ship, so we never guess it. Our inquiry form asks for your all-aboard time. If you do not have it yet, send the departure time and we will read the all-aboard time with you at the meeting point, once it is printed in your hand.

Planning an Ephesus tour backward, step by step

Most tours are planned forward: start at nine, see this, see that, head back. We plan this one from the end, and the arithmetic is short enough to show you.

  1. Start at all-aboard. It is the one fixed point of the day.
  2. Take off the walk. From the terminal exit to your gangway is about 5-10 minutes, depending on which of the port's eight berths your ship is using.
  3. Take off the drive. Ephesus is about 18-20 kilometers away, 20-25 minutes on a normal morning and longer when several ships are in.
  4. Keep a margin. We hold back time for the things nobody can schedule, and we agree the return time with you at the start of the day, not on the way back.
  5. Spend what is left. Ephesus comes first. Anything else is added only in the time the first four steps leave over.

That order matters. The ancient city is the reason most guests come ashore, so it is never the part that gets squeezed; when a call shrinks, the extras go first. How we follow your ship on the morning it arrives is set out on our back-to-your-ship page.

What you see: Ephesus first, then only what fits

The core is the ancient city from the Upper Gate down to the Lower Gate, about 1.5 hours at an easy pace with stops. You walk the length of Curetes Street, stand in front of the Library of Celsus and finish at the Great Theater. After that, each extra has its own price in tickets and in time:

ExtraTicket per adultWhat it costs in time
Temple of ArtemisIncludedA short stop on open ground beside the road into Selcuk; the easiest extra to fit
Terrace Houses€15About 30 to 45 minutes more, inside Ephesus; they open at 09:00, an hour after the main site
Basilica of St. John€6A detour to Ayasuluk Hill in Selcuk after the Lower Gate
House of the Virgin MaryAbout €15, priced in Turkish liraThe largest extra: a road that climbs above the Upper Gate, 30-35 minutes from the port, and a visit that should not be rushed

The Terrace Houses are the one extra that has to be decided early, because they sit partway down Curetes Street rather than after it. We make that call at the Upper Gate with the clock in front of us. Every other extra is decided at the Lower Gate, and on an early call the 09:00 opening can decide it for us.

Late ships, tender mornings and short calls

This tour exists for the days that do not run to plan. Here is how each one changes the shape of it.

  • A late arrival. When a ship docks late, its all-aboard time does not always move with it, so the day shrinks from the front. We follow your ship that morning, so we know before you walk off. The extras go first. If the call is really tight, a Lower Gate loop replaces the downhill walk and still reaches Celsus and the theater.
  • A tender morning. Ships at Kusadasi normally berth alongside, and tendering is rare. If your daily program lists a tender, tell us: the boats run in turns, so we count your time from the moment you step ashore, not from the ship's arrival.
  • A short call. Five hours ashore fits Ephesus comfortably, because the core runs about three hours door to door. Under five, we will tell you plainly whether Ephesus fits your all-aboard or whether The Open-Air Circle, with no tickets and almost no walking, is the better use of the time.
  • An afternoon call. A few calls in the schedule arrive at 13:00, and then there are two clocks. The Upper Gate ticket booth closes at 18:00, an hour before the Lower Gate booth, so we check the site's hours against your all-aboard before we choose a gate.
  • A busy port. In the twelve months of schedule we track, 65 days bring three or more ships to Kusadasi and 18 bring four or more. On those mornings the road and Curetes Street both fill, and we plan the drive at the long end of its range.

Walking, heat and lunch on a timed day

The downhill walk is about 1.5 hours on marble paving that is uneven in places and polished smooth in others, so wear shoes with grip. There is little shade between the Upper Gate and Celsus, and in July and August the middle of the day is hot, which is one more reason we like early starts. Bring water; the walk makes you thirstier than you expect.

The Terrace Houses have stairs and steel walkways and are not wheelchair accessible. A wheelchair user can enter at the Lower Gate and return to the Lower Gate, seeing the lower part of the city, and on a tight call that loop often suits the whole party anyway. Our wheelchair access guide has the detail.

Lunch is optional and never included. On a short call we suggest eating on the ship, because a sit-down meal costs the same time an extra would. On a long call it fits well after Ephesus. Vegetarian, vegan and halal are easy; kosher needs can be discussed when you book.

Who this tour suits, and when another fits better

All-Aboard Ephesus suits guests whose call is short, late, on a tender or in the afternoon, and anyone who would simply like someone else to own the clock. It is also a sound first visit when your hours are uncertain, because the plan bends instead of breaking.

If your call is a plain five to seven hours and you want the icons with no decisions at all, Just Ephesus is the same walk with a fixed shape. With eight hours or more and a wish to see the Terrace Houses properly, Marble, Mosaics and Artemis gives them the time they deserve. And if keeping an eye on any clock at all would spoil your day, the ship's own excursion is a good choice: the cruise line owns the timing from start to finish.

Not sure which? Send your ship, date and all-aboard time through our inquiry form, and we will tell you what fits.

We plan every tour backward from your ship's all-aboard time, not its departure. We check your ship's times the evening before, follow its position on the morning it arrives, and agree the return time with you at the meeting point.

Questions about this tour

What is the difference between all-aboard and departure time?

All-aboard comes first. It is the time by which every guest must be back on the ship, printed in the ship's daily program. Departure is when the ship actually sails, and it is the time port schedules show. The gap varies by line and ship, which is why we ask for your all-aboard time and plan the whole tour to it.

Will the ship wait if a private tour is running late?

Do not plan on it. A ship keeps its own schedule, and your all-aboard time is the one that counts. That is exactly why this tour is built backward from that time with a margin held in reserve, and why the extras are the first thing we drop when the clock gets tight.

How do I get from the cruise ship to Ephesus?

By road. Ephesus is about 18-20 kilometers from Kusadasi Cruise Port, about 20-25 minutes each way, longer on busy mornings. On this tour your guide meets you right outside the terminal exit, and a private vehicle takes you straight there and waits at the gate where your walk ends.

What happens if my ship arrives late?

We adapt. We follow your ship on the morning it arrives, so we know before you walk off that the day is shorter. The extras go first, then the route: a Lower Gate loop replaces the downhill walk if needed. If Ephesus no longer fits your all-aboard time, we tell you at the meeting point and suggest what does. If the ship skips Kusadasi, you owe nothing.

Is a five-hour port stop enough for Ephesus?

Yes, for Ephesus on its own. The core of this tour runs about three hours door to door: about 20-25 minutes each way on the road and about 1.5 hours walking downhill through the city. Five hours leaves room for the walk to your gangway and a margin. The extras need a longer call.

Is Kusadasi a tender port?

Rarely. Kusadasi has eight berths on two finger piers, and ships normally tie up alongside so you walk straight into the terminal. Tendering is possible but unusual. If your ship's daily program does list a tender, tell us when you inquire and we will meet you where the tender boats land, still outside the secure area.
