Port-day guide Planning your day
How Far Ephesus Is From Your Ship, and Every Way There
Ephesus sits inland from the coast, not next to the ship. Here is the real distance, the drive time, and how the four common ways there actually compare.
The short answer
Ephesus is about 18-20 kilometers from Kusadasi Cruise Port, a drive of roughly 20-25 minutes each way on a normal morning. A private guide, the ship's own excursion, a taxi from the port, and the local dolmus minibus all use the same road; the difference is who sets your schedule and who handles your ticket. That drive stretches on multi-ship mornings, so build in some room.
- Distance, port to Ephesus
- about 18-20 km
- Drive time, port to Ephesus
- about 20-25 minutes, each way
- Walk, gangway to terminal exit
- about 5-10 minutes, depending on your berth
- Drive time, port to Selcuk
- about 20-25 minutes
- Drive time, port to House of the Virgin Mary
- about 30-35 minutes
How far Ephesus is, in kilometers and minutes
Ephesus is about 18-20 kilometers from Kusadasi Cruise Port. On a normal morning that is roughly a 20-25 minute drive, one way, whichever vehicle you are in. Selcuk, the town Ephesus technically sits inside, is the same 20-25 minutes, since Ephesus and Selcuk share the same road out of Kusadasi.
Before any of that starts, there is a short first leg: the walk from your gangway to the terminal's exit gate, which the port puts at about 5-10 minutes depending on which of the eight berths your ship uses. Guests holding a private tour, ours included, are met right outside that exit, where your guide will be holding a sign with your name, usually within a minute of you stepping out.
None of these numbers are fixed. Kusadasi is a busy port, and on a morning with two or three ships in at once, the road inland gets slower and the drive can run longer than the 20-25 minute figure above. If your call is short, plan for that.
Four ways to cover that distance, compared
The road does not change. What changes is who is driving, who buys your ticket, and who decides when you leave and when you come back.
| Option | Who sets the schedule | Tickets | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private tour | Built around your ship's own times | Bought for you in advance, skip the line | Your own pace, your own guide |
| Ship's own excursion | The cruise line's departure and return times | Usually part of the excursion price | Zero logistics, very short calls |
| Taxi from the port | You decide, but you drive the clock yourself | You buy your own, at the ticket booth | Independent travelers comfortable finding their own way |
| Dolmus minibus | Runs on its own local timetable, not your ship's | You buy your own, at the ticket booth | Budget travel, longer calls with margin to spare |
A custom private day and the ship's excursion both remove the guesswork of getting there and back. A taxi or the dolmus put you in charge, at the cost of doing your own planning and standing in your own ticket line.

Which gate tours use
Most tours, ship excursions and private tours alike, start at the Upper Gate and walk downhill through the site to the Lower Gate, where the vehicle picks you up again; several of ours do the same. It is the natural direction: downhill, past the Terrace Houses and the Library of Celsus, finishing near the Great Theater. A few start and finish at the Lower Gate instead, for guests who ask for it, find the long walk hard or are short on time.
If you would rather understand both gates before you decide anything else, our Upper Gate or Lower Gate guide lays out what is near each one.
When the ship's own excursion is the simpler choice for distance
If your call is short, or you would simply rather not think about a drive, a taxi fare, or a ticket line, the ship's own excursion removes every one of those decisions in one booking. It is also the natural choice on lines that build shore excursions into what you have already paid.
For a longer call, or for a smaller group that wants its own guide and its own pace, a private tour covers the same 18-20 kilometers with more room to linger. Our Ship Excursion or Private Tour guide compares the two side by side.
Taxis and the dolmus, if you would rather go on your own
A taxi from the port covers the same road in the same 20-25 minutes and puts you in full control of your own timing. You buy your own entrance ticket at the booth, at the official price, and you arrange your own return.
The dolmus, Turkey's shared minibus, runs between Kusadasi and Selcuk on its own local schedule rather than around any ship's clock. It suits a longer call with plenty of margin more than a tight one, since it is not built for cruise passengers and will not wait for you.
Getting back before all-aboard
Whichever option gets you to Ephesus, the same 18-20 kilometers has to be covered again on the way back, and that return drive is where a tight call gets tighter. We plan every private day backward from your ship's stated all-aboard time, with room built in for the drive and for the walk back through the terminal.
For the fuller picture on timing your return, see Back to Your Ship, and if you want help matching a tour to your own call length, our port schedule page shows what a typical call for your ship's line looks like. Questions about a specific date are always welcome through our inquiry form.
Questions cruise guests ask us
How far is Ephesus from Kusadasi cruise port?
About 18-20 kilometers, a drive of roughly 20-25 minutes each way on a normal morning. That figure grows on mornings when several ships are in port at once, since the road inland gets busier.
How far is it from the cruise terminal to Ephesus by taxi?
The same 18-20 kilometers and roughly the same 20-25 minute drive as any other vehicle. A taxi just means you are paying and deciding for yourself, rather than following a guide's or a cruise line's schedule.
How far is Kusadasi from the airport?
Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport is about 64 kilometers from Kusadasi Cruise Port, which matters mainly if you are joining or leaving a cruise there rather than for a normal port day. From the airport, Ephesus itself is about 40 to 50 minutes by road.
Is there a bus or dolmus from the port to Ephesus?
There is a dolmus, the local shared minibus, running between Kusadasi and Selcuk, but it works on its own timetable, not a cruise ship's clock. It suits a longer call with margin to spare rather than a tight one.
Which gate does a private tour use at Ephesus?
Most tours, ours and the ship's own excursions included, start at the Upper Gate and walk down through the site to the Lower Gate, where the vehicle is waiting. A few start and finish at the Lower Gate instead, when guests ask for it, have walking difficulties or are short on time.
