Port-day guide Time ashore
How Much Time You Need for Ephesus on a Port Day
What Ephesus needs from you depends on your hours ashore, not the clock on the wall. Here is what fits at each length, and two sample days to plan against.
The short answer
Five hours ashore fits a focused visit to Ephesus alone. Eight hours or more adds the Terrace Houses; nine hours or more swaps that for the Basilica of St. John and the House of the Virgin Mary instead. Plan for about 20-25 minutes of driving each way, and, inside the site, a gate-to-gate walk that is often quoted at about 30-45 minutes on its own, before you stop anywhere.
- Drive, port to Ephesus, each way
- about 20-25 minutes
- Shortest private tour
- 3-3.5 hours; fits calls of 5 hours or more
- Longest private tour
- 6-7 hours; fits calls of 9 hours or more
- Walk across Ephesus, gate to gate
- often quoted at about 30-45 minutes, unhurried
What your hours ashore actually buy you
Five hours ashore is enough for a real visit to Ephesus on its own: the walk from the Upper Gate down to the Lower Gate, past the Library of Celsus and the Great Theater, with the drive there and back included. Our Just Ephesus tour is built for exactly this, at 3-3.5 hours on the ground.
Six or seven hours ashore still comfortably fits that same visit, with a little more room to slow down, or to add the Temple of Artemis on the way past. It is not quite enough, in our own planning, for the Terrace Houses or a second full site, since those need the extra time that an 8-hour call gives you.
Eight hours or more is where a fuller day opens up: Ephesus itself, plus the Terrace Houses, the plan behind our Marble, Mosaics and Artemis tour. Nine hours or more swaps the Terrace Houses for the House of the Virgin Mary and the Basilica of St. John instead, on our Road of Paul and John tour.
With nine hours or more, that fuller day also comes with real breathing room: a slower pace, time for lunch, and less pressure on the drive back.
How much of that time is just driving
Ephesus is about 20-25 minutes from the port by road, each way, so any tour starts by spending about 40-50 minutes just getting there and back. That is before you have walked a single step inside the site. On a morning with several ships in port at once, that drive stretches further, so a call listed as exactly 5 hours is more comfortable treated as slightly less.

Walking inside Ephesus itself
Walking the full length of Ephesus, from the Upper Gate to the Lower Gate, is commonly put at about 30-45 minutes on its own, without stopping anywhere. In practice nobody walks it without stopping: Curetes Street, the Library of Celsus and the Great Theater are the reason you came, so a real visit runs about 1.5 to 2 hours once you account for looking around, not just walking.
The Terrace Houses sit inside the same walk but need a separate ticket. The visitor route runs through Terrace House 2, seven residential units of wealthy Roman families under a protective roof, and is usually allowed about 45 minutes on its own. There is no wheelchair-accessible route: stairs and steel walkways only. If mobility is a concern, our wheelchair access guide covers what the Lower Gate route offers instead.
A sample day for a short call: 07:00-13:00
A 07:00-13:00 call gives about six hours ashore, once you count the walk off the ship. A typical rhythm looks like this:
| Time | What |
|---|---|
| 07:00 | Ship clears, walk to the terminal exit |
| 07:15 | Meet your guide at the terminal exit, depart the port |
| 07:40 | Arrive at the Upper Gate, Ephesus |
| 07:40-10:30 | Walk the site, Upper Gate to Lower Gate |
| 10:30-10:55 | Drive back toward the port |
| 11:00-12:30 | Free time in Kusadasi, or head back early |
| Before 13:00 | All-aboard, ahead of the ship's stated 13:00 departure |
This is the shape of our Just Ephesus tour, and it is not a promise to the minute, just an honest rhythm for this length of call.
A sample day for a full call: 08:00-18:00
An 08:00-18:00 call gives roughly ten hours ashore, enough to combine several stops without rushing any of them:
| Time | What |
|---|---|
| 08:00 | Ship clears, walk to the terminal exit to meet your guide |
| 08:20 | Depart the port |
| 08:45 | Arrive at the Upper Gate, Ephesus |
| 08:45-11:15 | Walk the site, Upper Gate to Lower Gate |
| Late morning | Drive up to the House of the Virgin Mary |
| Early afternoon | Basilica of St. John and the Temple of Artemis |
| Mid-afternoon | Lunch, if you would like one, then the drive back |
| Before 18:00 | All-aboard, ahead of the ship's stated 18:00 departure |
This is closer to our Road of Paul and John tour, again as a rhythm to plan against rather than a fixed clock. If you want lunch built into a call this length, see Lunch on a Port Day.
If your call does not match a clean number
Most calls do not arrive in a round 5, 6, 7 or 8 hours. Our Your Ship, Your Day tour is built from your own list and your ship's actual times, and our All-Aboard Ephesus tour is planned backward from your all-aboard time, whatever it is, including short, late and tender days. Tell us your call length through our inquiry form and we will tell you honestly what fits.
Questions cruise guests ask us
How many hours do I need for Ephesus from a cruise ship?
Five hours ashore is enough for a focused visit to Ephesus alone. Eight hours or more adds the Terrace Houses; nine hours or more swaps that for the Basilica of St. John and the House of the Virgin Mary instead.
Is 4 hours ashore enough for Ephesus?
It is tight for a full walking visit. Our Open-Air Circle tour is built for calls under five hours, with almost no walking and no separate entrance tickets, and still covers the Temple of Artemis and the Ayasuluk Hill viewpoint.
How long does it take to walk through Ephesus?
The gate-to-gate walk is often quoted at about 30-45 minutes on its own. A real visit, stopping at the Library of Celsus and the Great Theater, usually runs about 1.5 to 2 hours.
Can I see the House of the Virgin Mary and Ephesus in one day from the ship?
Yes, if your call is 9 hours or more. Our Road of Paul and John tour combines Ephesus, the House of the Virgin Mary and the Basilica of St. John, since the drive up to the House of Mary alone takes about 30-35 minutes from the port.
What fits if my ship's call is only 5 hours?
A visit to Ephesus itself fits comfortably, and our Just Ephesus tour is built for exactly this length. Adding a second site is possible but tight, since the drive there and back already uses about 40-50 minutes of your call.
