The Basilica of St. John on Ayasuluk Hill
Ayasuluk Hill rises straight out of Selcuk's rooftops, and the Basilica of St. John sits on top of it, built where tradition holds the apostle John was buried. One ticket also opens the fortress above the ruins.
The short answer
The Basilica of St. John stands on Ayasuluk Hill in Selcuk, about 20 to 25 minutes' drive from the Kusadasi cruise terminal. Built in the 6th century over the traditional tomb of the apostle John, it is open 08:00 to 19:00 daily, with tickets to 18:30, and costs €6 with Museum Pass Türkiye accepted. Give yourself an unhurried, unrushed stretch for the nave, the baptistery, and the view over Selcuk and the Ephesus plain.

What is the Basilica of St. John?
A large Byzantine church built in the 6th century by the Emperor Justinian I, on the same hill where an earlier, smaller church had already marked what tradition holds is the tomb of the apostle John. Justinian's building was on a grand scale, six domes over a cross-shaped plan, and the ruins still standing today, tall marble columns, brick piers, and long stretches of the outer wall, give a clear sense of that scale even without a roof overhead.
Ayasuluk Hill itself has been settled since long before Justinian's time, which is part of why the site rewards a slow walk rather than a quick photo stop.
What can you actually see among the ruins?
The nave's rows of marble columns are the first thing most visitors notice, several still standing to their full height. Off to one side sits the baptistery, its cross-shaped pool still traceable in the stonework, where new believers were baptized in the church's active centuries. Walk the perimeter and the site opens into wide views: south over Selcuk's rooftops toward the Ephesus plain, and west toward the Isa Bey Mosque and the standing column that marks the Temple of Artemis.
Little of the site has shade, so plan a visit outside the hottest part of a summer afternoon if your call allows the choice.

Is Ayasuluk Fortress part of the same visit?
Yes. The fortress walls rise directly above the basilica, further up the same hill, and they are open to visitors, not a ruin sealed off from the public. Most visitors walk the basilica first and continue up toward the fortress on the same trip, since the two sit on one hill with a single path connecting them.
How much time and money should you plan for?
Entry costs €6 per adult, and Museum Pass Türkiye is accepted here, unlike at the House of the Virgin Mary across the valley. The site opens at 08:00 and runs until 19:00, with the ticket booth closing at 18:30. Give yourself time to walk the nave, the baptistery, and the viewpoints without rushing, and longer again if the fortress climb is part of the plan. See our full fee breakdown for how this sits alongside Ephesus and the other sites on a longer day.
How does the Basilica fit around Ephesus and Selcuk?
Ayasuluk Hill sits inside Selcuk itself, a short drive from Ephesus rather than a separate detour, which is why it pairs naturally with a stop in the town below or a longer day that also covers Ephesus Ancient City. Our Road of Paul and John tour builds a full day around exactly this pairing, spending 6 to 7 hours across Ephesus, the Basilica, and the House of the Virgin Mary.
On a shorter call, the Basilica can still work as a stand-alone stop; tell us your ship's hours and we will say plainly what fits.
Why visit a ruined church at all?
Because the scale still reads clearly even without a roof, and because the tradition behind the site runs deep for a large share of our guests: a place associated with one of the four gospel writers, standing in a town most cruise passengers never expect to spend real time in. It rewards visitors who like ruins for what they suggest rather than only what remains standing, and the view alone, over Selcuk's rooftops toward Ephesus, is worth the climb up the hill.
Questions cruise guests ask us
What is the Basilica of St. John known for?
It marks the traditional burial place of the apostle John and was built on a grand scale by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century. Today's ruins, marble columns, a baptistery, and long stretches of wall, still show that original scale clearly.
How much does it cost to visit the Basilica of St. John?
€6 per adult, and Museum Pass Türkiye is accepted at the gate. The Ephesus Museum in Selcuk takes the same pass, which is a useful pairing if you are carrying one.
Can visitors still get into Ayasuluk Fortress?
Yes, it is open. The fortress walls rise above the basilica on the same hill and welcome visitors on foot, connected to the basilica by a single path most visitors walk in one trip.
How far is the Basilica of St. John from Kusadasi cruise port?
About 20 to 25 minutes' drive, the same run into Selcuk town that reaches Ephesus and the town's other sites. It is inside Selcuk itself, not a separate detour.
How long should you plan for a visit to the Basilica of St. John?
Long enough for an unhurried walk through the nave, the baptistery, and the viewpoints over Selcuk and the Ephesus plain, with more time again if a walk up into Ayasuluk Fortress is part of your visit.
